Hay Barn

Project Name – Hay Barn

Building Category – Residential, Class Q barn conversion

Location – Devon

Architect – Islington Architects Ltd

Main Contractor – Lock Build

Set within the beautiful rural landscape of Devon, Hay Barn is a striking contemporary barn conversion designed to maximise its connection with the surrounding countryside. The extensive use of architectural glazing is central to the design, bringing natural light deep into the building while framing wide, uninterrupted views across the landscape.

We delivered the complete architectural glazing package, incorporating large areas of curtain walling, minimal sliding doors, roof glazing, windows and doors.

A key feature of the project is the use of concealed and recessed framing, creating clean lines and minimal sightlines across the extensive glazed elevations. This allows the glass to become a dominant architectural feature, giving the impression that the surrounding landscape flows directly into the interior.

Large-format glazing extends to impressive heights, maximising daylight and creating a strong sense of space and openness throughout the property. The bespoke shaped frames were carefully designed to follow the geometry of the existing barn, requiring precision during both manufacture and installation.

The minimal sliding doors provide expansive openings onto the surrounding countryside, creating a seamless transition between the internal living spaces and the exterior. Roof glazing adds another dimension, drawing natural light down into the building and allowing the character of the space to change throughout the day as the light moves across the property.

Through the combination of concealed framing, minimal sightlines, bespoke shaped frames and extensive areas of glass, we were able to create a glazing installation that complements the architecture while making the most of the exceptional Devon setting.
