Project Name – Higher Dorsley
Building Category – Residential
Location – Devon
Architect – VESP Architects
Set within the South Hams countryside, Higher Dorsley is a contemporary Class Q barn conversion designed by VESP Architects and delivered by Higher Dorsley Building Contractors. The project combines the character of traditional agricultural buildings with a refined approach to modern living, using timber, local granite, zinc and extensive architectural glazing to create a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.
We provided and installed the architectural glazing throughout the project, including large glazed elevations and sliding door systems that bring natural light deep into the living spaces and create seamless connections between the interior and exterior.
The main living space features a substantial glazed elevation set within the expressed Douglas fir structure, creating a striking contrast between the warmth of the timber and the transparency of the glass. Large glazed sliding doors open directly onto the courtyard and covered seating area, extending the living space into the landscape beyond.
Full-height glazing to the master bedroom provides expansive views across the surrounding fields, with external timber screens offering privacy when required. Throughout the project, the glazing was carefully integrated into the timber and masonry construction to maintain the clean architectural lines established by VESP Architects.
Alongside the glazing, we designed, manufactured and installed bespoke aluminium pressings surrounding the glazed openings. These were developed to provide clean, precise interfaces between the glazing and the surrounding building fabric, with the detailing carefully considered to complement the timber structure and overall architectural aesthetic.
The combination of expansive glazing, bespoke aluminium detailing and the natural palette of timber, local granite and standing seam zinc creates a cohesive and understated finish. The result is a series of carefully integrated glazed openings that maximise daylight, views and connection to the landscape, while remaining sympathetic to the agricultural character of the original buildings.
Working closely with VESP Architects and Higher Dorsley Building Contractors, we delivered the architectural glazing and bespoke aluminium pressing package as an integral part of this distinctive Devon barn conversion.
