Project Name – Labrador Bay House
Building Category – Residential
Location – Devon
Architect – VESP Architects
Perched into the clifftops above the Shaldon coastline in South Devon, Labrador Bay House is a striking contemporary residence designed by VESP Architects to sit naturally within its landscape. The 550sqm home combines carefully considered stonework, timber and zinc roof forms with extensive areas of architectural glazing, creating a strong connection between the interior spaces, gardens and dramatic coastal views.
Working alongside VESP Architects and main contractor Goulden & Sons, we were appointed to deliver the architectural glazing and aluminium pressings throughout the project. Our role involved carefully coordinating the glazing package with the building’s distinctive architectural forms and material palette, helping to achieve the clean, minimal aesthetic envisioned by the design team.
The seaward-facing elevations feature extensive glazing, allowing natural light to flood the living spaces while framing uninterrupted views across the surrounding landscape and sea. Large glazed openings and sliding elements provide a seamless transition between the interior and external terraces, whilst the carefully proportioned aluminium frames complement the property’s dark timber, natural stone and zinc finishes.
The glazing forms a particularly important part of the home’s architecture, with the individual accommodation wings arranged beneath large, over-sailing roofs. High vaulted ceilings, clerestory glazing and expansive glazed elevations combine to create bright, open spaces, whilst maintaining the sense that the house is carefully nestled into the hillside.
Alongside the glazing package, we manufactured and installed the aluminium pressings throughout the project, providing crisp and durable detailing around the building envelope and at key junctions between the different materials. These elements required close coordination with the architectural and construction details to ensure the finished installation maintained the sharp lines and refined appearance of the overall design.
The project presented a number of challenges, from the complex geometry of the individual roof forms to the extensive glazed elevations and demanding hillside setting. Working closely with VESP Architects and Goulden & Sons, we were able to coordinate the glazing and aluminium detailing as the project developed, ensuring the installation integrated seamlessly with the wider construction.
Labrador Bay House is an excellent example of how architectural glazing can be used as an integral part of a building’s design – opening the home to its surroundings while helping it remain firmly rooted in the landscape.
We are proud to have contributed our architectural glazing and aluminium expertise to this exceptional South Devon residence, working alongside VESP Architects and Goulden & Sons to help bring this distinctive project to completion.
