Project Name – The Canopy
Building Category – Residential
Location – Devon
Architect – VESP Architects
The Canopy is a sensitive refurbishment and extension designed by VESP Architects and delivered by AP Build, transforming a characterful stone house into a modern family home with a strong connection to its wooded landscape.
The project combines the restoration of the original stone building with a series of contemporary extensions that step into the surrounding hillside. Architectural glazing forms an important part of the design, introducing natural light deep into the home while creating strong visual connections between the interior, garden and mature woodland beyond.
Expansive glazed openings and picture windows frame carefully considered views of the landscape, while the contemporary extensions create a seamless relationship between internal living spaces, garden areas and terraces. Deep-set aluminium glazing complements the restrained material palette of silver timber cladding, natural stone and finely detailed metalwork.
The contrast between the robust existing stonework and lightweight contemporary additions creates a distinctive architectural character. The glazing allows the new elements to sit lightly within their setting while opening the home towards its natural surroundings.
Internally, VESP Architects reconfigured the house around a series of interconnected living spaces, using carefully positioned openings and extensive glazing to maximise daylight and improve the flow through the building. Large glazed areas help dissolve the boundaries between the house and its garden, creating a sense of openness and bringing the surrounding landscape into the heart of the home.
Working with AP Build, the project brings together traditional stone craftsmanship and contemporary construction, with architectural glazing playing a central role in the transformation. The result is a light-filled family home where modern glazing, natural materials and the surrounding landscape work together in harmony.
